Mangalore: “Details related to the developmental works, which are undertaken in all the 60 wards of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), will be put up in its website shortly, with a separate menu”, according to MCC Commissioner Hephsiba Rani Korlapati. The Commissioner was responding to a question, during MCC general body meeting, here on Tuesday.

During the discussion, a councilor informed that a resolution was passed to sanction Rs 15 lakh under general fund category to every council member to undertake developmental works in his/her respective ward. The grant has not been sanctioned to every councilor even after completing the work. “Only Rs 6 crore out of Rs 9 crore has been sanctioned”, councilor Shashidar Hegde said.

Responding to their query, Commissioner Ms. Korlapati said that she has visited few of the wards and inspected the works. We will sanction pending amounts ones the estimation is complete, she told the council.

Meanwhile, she also informed that all the works, which are undertaken in the corporation limits, will be put up on the MCC website for transparency.

Councilor v/s Commissioner

The indifference between the councillors and the commissioner came to the fore even during the council meeting. Councilors of both the political parties mentioned that the Commissioner was not functioning ‘properly and respecting them’. Councilor Rathi Kala said that one’s she was not allowed to get into Commissioner’s chamber to submit important issues. Another councilor said that Ms. Korlapati did not respond to the problems faced by residents of her ward.

Senior corporater Harinath said many works in the city have been stalled for not clearing the bills. “We are not asking the commissioner to violate rules. Our demand is that she should clear pending bills and complete the projects without any delay. I will be forced to boycott all the MCC meetings, if commissioner does not change her style of functioning”, he asserted. Simultaneously, the members expressed acknowledgement to what he said, by banging the tables.

To which, Mayor Jecintha Vijay Alfred instructed the commissioner to not to repeat these ‘mistakes’. The issue, however, died down, after BJP councillor said that the Congress councillors were not happy with the ‘strict attitude’ of the commissioner. Harinath responded saying, we are not against her strict attitude but against delaying completion of works.
