Mangalore: The city is likely to get a cyber crime police station within two months. Manglaore Police Commissioner R. Hitendra on Wednesday said the process has been initiated to set up a separate department for cyber police in the city.

Speaking to the reporters, Police Commissioner said the department would function from the building of Mangalore South and Mangalore East Traffic Police Stations at Kadri. “We have provided the space. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will have to depute officers and provide the equipment required”.

He said the CID will control the operations of the new cyber crime police stations and assist the local police.

There are six police zones in Karnataka. Every zone in the state will have one cyber crime police station. As Mangalore is the head quarters of the western zone, the cyber crime police station for the zone will be stationed in the city, he added.

The staff in the initial stage will be recruited on contract basis. The cyber crime police station is specialised in dealing with complaints related to cyber crimes. CID police will assist in investigations.

Presently, Mangalore police had to forward cases related to cyber crimes to the department of cyber police, which is located in Bangalore.
