Mangalore: Contrary to the promise made to the people, the congress-ruled Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) is collecting property tax at a rate higher by 15 percent, Mayor Mahabala Marla admitted on Wednesday.

The congress promised that they would not increase the property tax, if brought to power. Recently, the corporation council passed a resolution suggesting that there will be no increase in property tax rate.

When asked, Mayor Mahabala Marla told press persons tha the council has done its duty by passing a resolution in the council. The same is forwarded to the state government through the MCC commissioner. Now, it’s for the government to take the decision. We have told our ministers and MLA’s to look into the issue, he added.

“After I took the responsibility as the mayor, I did my duty. But, it cannot be done all alone. Even the ministers and the MLA’s have to show the same commitment to the poll promise”,  he said.

It’s learnt that presently the property tax is collected at a rate higher by 15 percent.
