Mangaluru: The concluding day of Federation Cup snatched away fortunes from Karnataka as athletes representing the Army overpowered sports persons of the state. Though Karnataka dropped to second place – women from the State bagged most of the medals.
The final day of FC saw many finals in quick succession. The Army and State of Tamilnadu showcased sportive brilliance winning many medals. The Karnataka in total won five gold medals, five silver and three bronze medals. The women’s 4*100m relay captured eyes of local spectators, Karnataka team emerging victories in style.
M R Poovamma of Mangaluru won the gold medal and was qualified to Asian games. Speaking briefly to Newskarnataka.com, she said, the weather of Mangaluru did not affect her much like other performing athletes from other parts of the country were affected
Though she could not finish 400m run in 52.5 sec as she expected, Poovamma said that she was satisfied with her current performance (53.41). “I did not have much time to train myself and I am happy that I have been selected to Asian Games”, said Poovamma, who represented ONGC.
The team Army bagged championship scoring 123.5 among men and Kerala (86.0) among women. The shot put sportsman Indrajith Singh awarded as best athlete. The grand FC came to close downing the flag hoisted on day one.
