Mangaluru: The requirement of Aadhaar card for availing scholarship was censured by MLC Ivan D’souza on Saturday in Karnataka Development Program meeting. Though, Deputy Director of Public Instruction Moses Jayashekar informed the chair Aadhaar was not mandatory to get the scholarship procedures done, the latter reprimanded the department for introducing new requirement.

The students were perplexed due to new announcement. Ivan said “Children are made to queue up both in the Aadhaar centers and in a place where scholarship procedures are fulfilled”. However he criticized Aadhaar system which has been generating umpteen numbers of problems to the public. Either card has to be distributed in a smooth manner or has to be scrapped, he hit out at Chairman and district in charge minister Ramanath Rai.

Quoting reports published in one of the Kannada daily Ivan expressed that officials of the education department were making children to run from pillar to post posing Aadhaar necessity for scholarship. “Why children should produce Aadhaar card,” he questioned. The DDPI Moses clarified that he received orders from his higher authority to announce new requirement but department has not made the same compulsory. “We are issuing scholarship for the students not producing Aadhaar as well”, he informed.

At this juncture, Ivan pleaded the chair to consider the problems faced by the students and choke out a permanent solution at the earliest.

The deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim explained that the administration has set up 17 Aadhaar units to distribute the cards and they have no control over the private agency distributing cards. Considering this units were set up. So far, according to the data available with the district administration 16 lack cards distributed and 4 lack people yet to receive the cards. MLA Ivan urged to speed up the process to end chaos prevailing.

Shiradi Ghat tender yet to be finalized

The official from the National Highway Authority of India in the meeting told that the last date to submit the tender at Delhi is April 4. The tender which the NHAI sent recently was rejected citing few problems.

Currently NHAI has been finalizing the tender for the construction of 2nd phase of road at Shiradi and it has to be produced to a concerned department before April 4. The official divulged NHAI has completed 40% of the works under 1st phase. He hoped work would be materialized within the month of May end.

Surprisingly, though the conditions of alternate road connecting Bengaluru, at Charmadi Ghat would worsen during the rainy season NHAI has not taken any step to asphalt the same. This drew flak by Ramanath Rai and who later informed he would convene a meeting at state level to find the solution.

Earlier to the meeting district-in-charge minister Ramanath Rai inaugurated anti-child labor awareness vehicle. The vehicle will travel around the district till April 6 spreading awareness on curbing child labor. The program is carried out by district administration in consortium with District Child Labor Project Society
