Forest dept driver commits suicide under pressure

Madikeri: A forest department driver committed suicide in the departmental guest house on June 22, holding three from the department accountable for him taking the extreme step.

H S Manjunath (55), a resident of Banigiri of Sakleshpur taluk employed as driver at Forest Research Centre in Sakleshpur, is the deceased.

Manjunath had come to Madikeri to drop Assistant Forest Conservator of Forests H Purnima to her residence on the night of June 22. Purnima who is deputed to oversee operations at Forest Research Centre at Sakleshpur returned in the department vehicle.

Manjunath joined Y A Vasudev and Dayanand at forest guest house for the overnight stay but committed suicide in the morning when both left for duty, police said.

In his death note, he has mentioned of harassment by Deputy Conservator of Forests of Sakleshpur Anupama, Zonal Forest Officer Dayanand and driver Suresh in a tree theft case.

“In the death note, Manjunath has held all three accountable for his death and has named them”, Superintendent of Police P Rajendra Prasad confirmed.
