Flood threat on horizon as rains pound Kodagu district

Madikeri: Heavy rains which have been lashing Kodagu region for the past few days continued its pace on Tuesday too. The region received a rainfall of 127.74 mm on Tuesday.
River Cauvery is overflowing after Bhagamandala received a rainfall of 255.4mm. Due to heavy showers Triveni Sangama is likely to get inundated soon. Residents of Napoklu, Balamuri, Guhya, Nelyahudikeri in Siddapura have been asked to stay alert and shift to safer places as the water level in Cauvery is increasing.

The rainfall in the region this year is comparatively lesser than last year. The region received a rainfall of 598.24mm rain from January to June this year, while it was 1138.7mm last year. Madikeri and Virajpet taluk received 177.55mm and 104.88m rainfall on Wednesday respectively. The total rainfall received by Virajpet taluk last year was 1101.54mm, whereas it is only 452.81mm this year. Somwarapet taluk received 100.8mm rain this Wednesday. The region recorded a rainfall of 815.61mm last year while it is 413.7mm this year.

Due to heavy showers, the water flow to Harangi dam has increased as over 6018 cusecs. The maximum water storage level here is 2,859 ft and now it is 2824.54ft. If the rains continue to pound for a few more days, the dam is likely to cross the level.
