Madikeri: Codava National Council (CNC) has opposed any move to construct a dam across river Kongana in Kuthnad area of South Kodagu by terming it as dangerous.
Addressing reporters in Madikeri, CNC president N U Nachappa said, “CNC strongly opposes such a move. If the project is implemented, the entire South Kodagu will be submerged. The government is bowing to the stratagem of Hunsur legislator Manjunath to provide water to Hunsur”.
He recalled the agitation during BJP regime in 2010 where a similar proposal by the then irrigation minister Basavaraja Bommai was dropped after huge protests. The issue is being raked again to disturb peaceful atmosphere in the district and CNC will launch an agitation from Ponnampet, he warned.
The district did not benefit from major dam projects like Harangi and Chikhlihole where farmers lost their land and got nothing in return, Nachappa said.
The government rule restricting usage of water from the tributaries of river Cauvery might end in drying up coffee estates as growers will not be able to water them in December and January, he stated.
During the 26th Codava national day celebrations in Madikeri on November 24, CNC will demand implementation of its 11 major demands, Nachappa confirmed.
