Madikeri: Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights (PMHR) in Kodagu voiced concern over the impact of multiple birth anniversary celebrations on peace, harmony and state economy and called for blanket ban on all.
In the press statement, PMHR President Harish G.Acharya revealed his intention to request the Prime Minister through a letter seeking ban on all birth anniversary celebrations as they have failed to achieve their original goals.
He said, the birth anniversaries have become tools to appease a particular community, religion or group. The have lost their intention of instilling and imparting values to people. The birthday celebrations are causing huge losses to state exchequer as they lead to series of government holidays where government offices come to stand still causing great hardship to ordinary citizens of the country, Acharya said adding that processions and programs associated with the celebrations give rise to communal tension and differences among religious communities and caste groups.
As the officialdom is totally involved in these celebrations, useful administrative business is lost and the government money is wasted by paying salaries to holidaying staff thereby resulting loss to national exchequer, he stated. The police force is blamed for lapses and in turn some are opting for voluntary retirement which is a disturbing development, he noted.
He suggested celebrating Independence Day, Republic day, Rajyotsava day and birthday anniversary commemorating Gandhi and BR Ambedkar must be held and all other celebrations by the government must be banned.
