Madikeri: Air Marshal K C Cariappa called upon the present generation to remember the selfless sacrifice of martyred soldiers, while dedicating a war memorial and emblem tower in the green environs of Cherangala village on April 29.
A “Native meet” was held on the occasion organised by Cauvery Janmabhoomi Trust at Talarabane before the inaugural of the war memorial by Air Marshal K C Carippa (PVSM) which is built at a cost of Rs 40-50 Lakh. Retired Assistant Director of Toyota Kirloskar unveiled the specially built emblem tower on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Air Marshal Cariappa said only during the time of war God and Soldier are remembered and then forgotten.
He lauded the effort to construct a war memorial in remembrance of services of all three wings of defence forces in the remote area of the district.
He hoped the war memorial to inspire modern youth in the district and increase their zeal to defend the nation. At the same time, he called upon the people to protect the environment which is taking a severe beating in the midst of mega road and railway development projects.
Presiding over the programme, Lt.Gen. Kadambi expressed happiness over the naturally green location chosen for the memorial which conveys the message of “protection” of both nature and nation.
“There is a need for a legislation to provide jobs to ex-servicemen”, said K K Swamy and hoped the central government led by PM Modi will do the needful to honour the deserving with jobs after their service in defence forces.
CMC President Kaveramma Somanna exhorted locals not to part the land and culture and instead strive to protect it.
TP President Tekkade Shobha, Cauvery Janmabhoomi Trust President M C Ravikumar, entrepreneur Ramesh G Patil and others were present.
