Madikeri: Senior advocate and former member of legislative assembly A K Subbaiah expressed reservation in joining protest against Kasturirangan report after the union government issuing a notification for its implementation.

Talking to press reporters, Subbaiah said only when the powerful in the district agree to fight for the cause of Diddalli tribals, he would then reconsider his decision to join the protest against Kasturirangan report. Subbaiah contended that the poor tribals deserve justice and asked if everyone would align with the rich and powerful, who will fight for the cause of poor and helpless.

The union government committed a serious mistake by issuing the notification, Subbaiah said and added that hundreds of objections from affected people can be considered. Silence of Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha over the issue is baffling, Subbaiah said.

Environmentalists at international level have lobbied to form eco-sensitive zone, Subbiah alleged and said there is a need to separate agricultural zone from forest zone.

None from the District Congress including District In-charge Minister M R Seetharam and leaders Veena Achaiah, Brijesh Kalappa and Saritha Pooncha are keen to resolve the issue to benefit tribals but are causing impediments instead, Subbaiah alleged.

When CM Siddaramiah is trying to find a solution, officials are busy finding ways to evict tribals by taking unilateral decisions without consulting the deprived lot, he alleged.

The government should provide two acre land to each of the 5000 tribals in the district and take back 36,000 B and C category lands, he opined. In Diddalli area alone there is 8500 acres of revenue land good enough to distribute among 3000 tribals, Subbiah stated.

Tribals were not given the title deeds for ages and suddenly the district administration has evinced interest in issuing them-a real hidden plot to evict the tribals, he alleged.

“Who will provide shelter and jobs in case title deeds are given?”, Subbiah questioned and remained hopeful of finding a solution during the meeting with the chief minister in the near future,

It may be recalled that the notification by the Centre has drawn Karnataka’s ire with the state government accusing the Centre of ignoring its objections. According to the notification, about 20,668 square kilometres area in the state—which includes 1,576 villages—has been declared eco-sensitive zone.

The notification may lead to farmers not being granted land rights and would also affect the existing plantations like coffee and tea, it is feared.

A K Subbiah had opposed the implementation of Kasturirangan report in the past and had taken active part in protest against its implementations.
