Madikeri: Tipu Jayanthi has evoked sharp criticism across the state in general and Kodagu in particular. However, a peace meet was organised by the district administration on Monday to ensure that Tipu Jayanthi will be held peacefully.

Amidst Hindu organisations staging a boycott during the meeting and Muslim leaders urging the district administration to celebrate the event at official level, the meet resolved to conduct the event without fail on November 10 with adequate police security. The meet held at Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Dr Richard Vincent D’Souza and was attended by members of various organisations and political parties.

District BJP President Manu Muthappa said that the state government was hurting the sentiments of the people of the district by celebrating Tipu Jayanthi. “If the government was so bothered about the minorities, it should utilise the amount to be spent on the Tipu Jayanthi for the welfare of the minorities,” he said adding that if any untoward incidents happen during the celebration, then the government would be directly responsible for the same. He said that the ones opposing the celebration are being booked under Section 107, which is blatant injustice.

Swami Vivekananda Janaseva Sangha President Ganesh questioned the government the use of the such celebrations, which will break the society. “Last year a sum of Rs 34 lac was spent on the whole celebration. This year, considering the kind of opposition that is building up, the government will end up spending lot more on celebration and security,” he said.

Soon, members of several Hindu organisations, including Bajrang Dal staged a walk out registering their opposition to the celebration. All of the DC’s efforts to convince the faction opposition Tipu Jayanthi yielded no results.

City Congress President K U Abdul Razak said that the district administration has printed 200 invitations for the programme, which should not be distributed to anyone. “Let Tipu Jayanthi be celebrated at the government office level by the officials and let it not be a public event,” he suggested.
