Vexed yet mixed reactions surround Delhi generator ban

New Delhi: After Delhi’s air pollution levels continue to cause worry and panic among the authorities, the Environment Pollution Control Authority’s decision to ban the use of generator sets has come as a less than viable solution to the problem.

The ban on generator sets, which was issued on October 17, will be applicable in Delhi and not in the rest of NCR as they have not yet found any suitable alternatives.

Citizens and and lawmakers alike, find the ban unnecessary as there already exists certain norms relating to emissions from generators.

A citizen claimed that the recent ban on the sale of fire crackers did not prevent the people from bursting crackers in the end. He is of the opinion that such bans and prohibitions are ill-equipped to curtail the problem unless the law makers “do their homework” before trying to implement such measures.

He added that implementing the ban would make the previous norms (relating to generators) void. He went on to warn that the ban could prove to have a negative impact on the the life of the people in Delhi.

Ashutosh Dixit, a functionary in United Residents Joint Action, said that the ban was to be viewed as an emergency measure and one that was not permanent as it would be in force only till 15 March 2018.

He said that the problems were bound to arise but this should be accepted as it was for a greater good, that being a better future. He said that certain sections of the society might be more affected than some others but sacrifices need to be made for a better tomorrow.
