Mumbai: Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu has ordered a high-level inquiry into the freak accident at Churchgate on Sunday.
He said : “All lapses of any kind responsibility will be fixed, action will be taken.”
Sources said a four-member inquiry committee will be formed which will comprise senior administrative officers of rank of joint secretary and above to probe the mishap.
Five persons were injured as a Bhayander-Churchgate train rammed into a dead-end buffer and surged ahead on the platform. It took nearly a day to remove the affected coach and clear the platform for rail traffic. The motorman, guard and loco inspector have been suspended. The motorman has been accused of not applying brakes on time. In his statement to officials, the motorman has claimed innocence and said he had applied the brakes, but they did not work properly.
“The cause of the mishap will be ascertained only after the inquiry,” an official added.
