Agartala: Nonagenarian CPI-M leader and freedom fighter Chitta Chanda has died at a government medical college here, the party said Tuesday. He was 95.

“Suffering from various old age ailments, he was admitted in Gobinda Ballav Pant Medical College and hospital July 20 and breathed his last there Monday night,” a CPI-M spokesman told reporters.

Chanda’s body was brought to the party office Monday night itself to allow people to pay their last respects.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and other Communist Party of India-Marxist leaders paid floral tributes to the departed leader.

The last rites were performed at Battala mass cremation ground here Tuesday.

Former chairman of CPI-M Tripura unit’s control commission, Chanda, a bachelor, also participated in India’s freedom struggle and was imprisoned for many years.

He became a member of the undivided communist party in 1960 and joined the CPI-M in 1964 after its division.

The CPI-M flag in all party offices was flown at half mast Tuesday as a mark of respect.
