Kejriwal delivers on pledge: AAP’s power and water bonanza

New Delhi: Eleven days after forming the Delhi government, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party or AAP has delivered on its big-ticket election promises: cheaper water and power.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced today that every household will get 20,000 litres of  water at no cost every month; families who use less than 400 units of power per month will get a 50% discount on their bills, the others will pay full rate for electricity.

Its commitment to cheaper utilities is seen as one of the driving forces of AAP’s phenomenal result in the Delhi election last month – it won more than 95% of the seats in the Delhi assembly.

A day after taking over office, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had asked the officials of the finance and power departments and the Delhi Jal Board to send their proposals on the matter.

It is not clear yet whether the government will compensate private power companies for the losses or ask them to bear the costs. But the government is planning to bring in sector-specific experts, who will work with the Chief Minister’s Office to help execute AAP’s 70-point manifesto.

Critics have pointed out that Delhi has a power demand of about 5,000 MW and is largely dependent on other states to meet its requirements. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had questioned how political parties in states suffering from electricity deficit could make such promises.

During its 49-day stint last year, the AAP-led government had announced a 50% subsidy on power consumption up to 400 units in the national capital, following which power bills of the consumers were practically cut by half.

The then AAP government had also ordered a CAG audit into the finances of three private power distribution companies in the national capital.
