Guwahati: Former Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Baruah, whose house was raided in connection with the multi-crore Saradha chit fund scam, has committed suicide.
Baruah, a 1974 batch Indian Police Service officer, had been admitted to hospital for the last three days and had been released from hospital on Wednesday morning. He was suffering from depression. According to police officials, Baruah shot himself dead using a revolver.
His house had been raided by the Central Bureau of Investigation on August 28. Baruah was being investigated for his alleged role and business links with the Saradha group. He allegedly provided security to Saradha Group chief Sudipta Sen in his personal capacity. The former IPS officer allegedly used to demand protection money from the Saradha Group.
