Hubballi: In a tragic incident, six people, including a woman and railway employees died after a 130-year-old building collapsed at the railway station here on Monday.

More than 15 people were injured in the tragic incident and were shifted to the Railway Central Hospital here. The condition of two people is said to be serious.

Parcel office chief commercial clerk Timmareddy (58), constable Dakshayani Goudar (35), booking agent Saleem Eeti (32), police writer Siddayya Hiremath (32) and two visitors, Kailas Rajani (62) and M?Galeppa (38), are the deceased.

The 130-year-old building, which houses a parcel office and police station, came crashing down while several employees were still inside.

The Death toll may increase, reports say, as more people are trapped under the debris and rescue operation which went on throughout the night is till on.

The authorities were planning to construct a new building after shifting the police station located on the first floor. The police, KSRP and Fire and Emergency teams were pressed into service for the rescue operation.

The incident occurred when most of the employees of the parcel office working on the ground floor were away for lunch at 2.30 pm. The walls of the building had developed cracks and the police station on the first floor had been shifted to other premises.

But, the railway authorities had not shifted the parcel office, despite pleas made by the railway employees. The rescue teams had to clear the debris with their hands as the use of heavy machinery would bring down the remaining part of the building. They pumped in oxygen to help the possible survivors stranded in rooms under the debris.

SWR general manager Pradeep Kumar Saxena, Police Commissioner Pandurang Rane, Deputy Commissioner P Rajendra Cholan and other officials supervised the rescue operations.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has announced Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the next of the kin of the deceased.

District in-charge minister Vinay Kulkarni also visited the spot and blamed the railway officials for delay in vacating the premises.
