Hubballi: To cater to the needs of the farming community and to understand their problem with close proximity to the villagers, former chief minister and Janata Dal (S) State President H D Kumarswamy has proposed to hold “Grama Vasthavya” (village stay) programme after August 15.

The village stay programme will be held in 50 villages in North Karnataka, stated Kumarswamy while speaking to media persons in Hubballi.

He said even after the state government announcing crop loan waiver scheme of up to Rs 50,000 for each farmer the suicide incidents among the farmers had not stopped. “Since the farmers are distressed a lot, we intend to energise them through village stays”, he said.

The village stay programme would be followed by a mega farmers’ convention in Vijaypura, he stated.

Reacting to a query, he said the JD(S) would be fielding its candidates in all the constituencies. The special focus would be on bagging a minimum of 40 to 45 seats in Mumbai-Karnataka and Hyderabad-Karnataka regions, he added.

He came down heavily on Mahadayi water row alleging that the Centre was not showing its commitment towards solving it.

To a query on independent status to Lingayath religion, he bated for the said status to the community citing that many people in this community were deprived of several government facilities.
