Hubballi: Farmers in the drought-hit North Karnataka are selling their cattle at throwaway prices.
Owners of slaughter houses, middlemen and commission agents are making money in the process by visiting the farmers home to buy their cattle.
The animal husbandry officials claim that the district had enough fodder and arrangements had been made to supply it to the farmers.
They say that fodder banks are opened for the benefit of the farmers with fodder available for Rs 3 per kg in five villages.
Dr Manjunath S Palegar, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, said that 40 tonnes of fodder and more will be supplied on the basis of requirement.
“It is responsibility of the Gram Panchayat to make arrangements for supply of drinking water for the cattle,” he said.
