Kalaburagi ragging case: Three accused remanded to 14-day judicial custody

Kalaburagi: Three students of Al Qamar Nursing College, who were taken into police custody on Friday and interrogated in connection with the ragging of a student, were remanded to 14-day judicial custody.

Late in the night, the three girls were produced before a magistrate who remanded them to a 14-day judicial custody. The police are on the lookout for one more student for custody and interrogation.

Sources said, that the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Jhanhavi led special investigating team (SIT) took the three girls – Lakshmi, Athira and Krishna from college and interrogated them. It is said that the girls had been to Kerala after the ragging incident and were back in the college on Friday to attend classes.

The SIT visited the college and also the private hospital where the victim was hospitalized and investigated. It is said that they met the concerned authorities to take their statement.

Sources said that the team met the victim’s friend and also the friends of the accused. It is learnt that the college management had kept the police in the dark about the incident.

Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police N Shashikumar has said that the Kalaburagi police have added a few more charges to the original FIR registered by the Kozhikode police. They include Section 116 of the Karnataka Education Act 1983 to replace the provisions of the Anti-Ragging Act of Kerala, Section 336 of the IPC against the College Authorities and Section 176 of the IPC for failure to inform the police about the incident.

It may be recalled that the victim, Aswathi (19), hailing from Mallapuram in Kerala, is battling for her life at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital (KMCH) after seniors allegedly forced her to drink toilet cleaning solution on May 9.
