Kalaburagi: A high school girl resorted to two-day hunger strike demanding construction of a toilet at her home. The stir yielded fruit as her parents finally went ahead to build one with the help of Zilla panchayat officials, here in Kalaburgi.

Pooja Neelakanta, a class 8 student from Sedam taluk in Udagi district had requested her parents to build toilet at her house to which her father refused. However, Pooja succeeded in convincing her parents by holding hunger strike for two days.

The incident came to light during a phone-in programme on cleanliness held in government schools by ZP CEO Hepsiba Rani on September 22 in Kalaburgi. The CEO had received over 11 calls, among which Pooja had complained about her parents who are opposing the construction of toilet at her house and she informed about hunger strike demanding a toilet. The CEO urged her to withdraw hunger strike and assured her of building a toilet after convincing her parents.

On September 23, the PDO and other officials started construction of toilet. Pooja was inspired by Mallamma from Koppal who too shares a similar story. Pooja’s father is an auto driver. “I had requested my parents but they did not pay heed hence I had to resort to hunger strike,” Pooja said.
