Vij, who has unbelievably launched an online poll across social networks like Twitter, Facebook and Google+ to garner support for cows, says making the cow India’s national animal would preclude the need for any special laws to protect the animal from slaughter.

Haryana’s ever so Twitter-happy health minister Anil Vij believes he has hit upon a sure-fire way of protecting the Indian cow for posterity – declare it the national animal in place of the Bengal Tiger.

“Just the peacock is protected by virtue of being the national bird,” says the minister, calling for a similar status for cows.

“The cow needs protection,” says Vij insisting that, ferocious as they are known to be, tigers can look after themselves! The mantri’s poll, essentially drawing out his own online fan following, is  witnessing an overwhelming vote for the cow.

Since it went online on October 12, 89.4 per cent of the 524 votes cast strongly favoured bovines over big cats.

Vij, who first called to designate the cow India’s national animal in the wake of the Dadri Incident, has been persistently sniping at “the so-called #Intelligensia” for “advising people to respect sentiments of #beef eaters.”
