Open Letter to Mr Anup Bhandari, Director of Kannada Movie RangiTaranga

Anup, Please go back to USA, go back to making Hollywood short movies and winning awards. Kannada Movies are not for you, Yes you heard it right ‘not for you!’  May be even consider moving to Mumbai, Chennai or Hyderabad, but don’t be in Bengaluru.  Kannada Film Industry doesn’t deserve you. Please, please, please don’t waste your talent being around crooks who can sell anything for money, even self-respect!

Kannada Film Industry is run by bunch of hypocrites, No one’s worried about Kannada, it’s all business. How would you expect such low IQ people to understand the meaning of Passion, determination and love for the Language?

Yes, if you go back to USA, you would be worried only about making films, and not about the politics surrounding it. If you are to be in Kannada Film Industry, you should not be talented, know the politics well and come with gimmicks more than the substance, only then you would have a place here.

I am writing this with so much anguish just being a viewer and someone who would want to watch good Kannada movies, but thinking about you I can’t explain in words how it must be feeling for someone who has put blood and sweat, made sacrifices and to top it, has made a sensible movie. If it was me, to see my ‘work of art’ being thrashed for someone’s greed and the dirty politics, I wouldn’t have stayed, so I am asking you to do the same.

I don’t know you personally or anything about you, but I know that you are blessed with so much Talent, when the Kannada industry is lacking innovation and the stars are churning out one Remake after the other, and lyrics of the songs has more English and Hindi words than kannada. Here you are with a swamake movie with original screenplay and story and Lyrics which sans the use of any other language and is so beautiful. Yet, you are in the crossroads where the movie can’t see the second week even after getting such amazing response from the audience, running houseful even on weekdays even after giving your movie odd show times.

What could you have done differently? Believe me there’s nothing you or we the audience could do. You did what you could have done, give us a good Movie, and even the audience did what they could, filled up the screens even on weekdays.

These hypocrites of Gandhinagara cry that Kannada Audience do not come to the theaters , if there are no Kannada movies in the theaters how would you expect them to come ? This is the sole reason a sensible Kannadiga has moved away from watching Kannada Movies, they don’t want to be involved in any of these politics, all they care is a good Movie, and when a good Movie comes along, even before people know it, it’s already out of theaters.

You would have experienced this first hand on how difficult it is to get theaters in Karnataka for a newcomers movie, if you do not have contacts your movie would be killed even before it reaches the theaters. If the Industry is not conducive to new comers, how would you expect it to grow and reach new avenues? Who are we going to ask these questions, who is ready to answer? No one!

I am no expert or an average viewer is no expert in knowing about the proceedings of Gandhinagara, but it’s no rocket science either to know that no one’s for the Kannada cause. Want to find some hypocrites, go to Gandhinagara and you will mind more per square meter than any place in the world.

These people say they are against dubbing saying its pro Kannada, and they want to save Kannada from other languages, but the same people who were against dubbing citing Kannada’s cause have taken distribution for Bahubali’s Hindi dubbed version to be released in Karnataka. What can you say?

These people do not release Kannada movies in good theaters like Urvashi, saying they can’t take cut on profits but readily accept the same for Telugu movies, isn’t this hypocrisy? When was the last time a Kannada movie got released in Urvashi? Are Kannada people second grade citizens in our own Bengaluru, why are we denied watching cinema’s in good theaters?

One of the biggest Producers who produce Kannada movies have taken rights for distribution for Bahubali, and they are booting out good kannada movies out of theaters, would they let this happen to their own Kannada cinema if some other producer had taken rights for Bahubali ? In all these what is the Chamber doing, what is the producers association doing, they come out to protest on trivial things, ban people for personal reasons, what happened now?

Think about this a good kannada Cinema which had houseful shows despite of having off timings in the first week gets 3 screens and bahubali a Telugu cinema gets 209 screens, are we really in Bengaluru ?

Who should we ask these questions, should we protest? If yes, who would protest? the Cinema Team or the audience?  I mean making a movie is such a huge task itself and now you should think about other factors like politics, protest? I wouldn’t have that much in me if it was me, If I was as talented as you I wouldn’t spend my energy in things like this. I would rather channel my energy towards the creative process.

I am not sure, what would be your course of action, will you take it with a pinch of salt and think it was your bad luck that you had to release it now, or you would fight for justice or just move on making more Movies. I genuinely hope and pray that you get the best whatever you do from now, you certainly deserve it. But, unfortunately with the current scenario in Kannada Film Industry its better you move out of it. You are such a talented person, you can make it big anywhere. It’s even better if you make movies outside Karnataka, anyways with this industry’s obsession with remake movies, your other language movies would be remade here and you could be happy that your movie reached the people. You never know that movie could get 209 screens here!

I am sorry, we let you down Anup, but you will always be loved for bringing such a fresh wave in Kannada movies. We Kannada movie lovers were getting really excited about the prospects we have in the last few years with Pawan, Rakshit and Giriraj bringing new energy but with all this around, I doubt we could go any far. I know I am sounding very pessimistic and many would just dismiss me blatantly, but I feel this is the fact. I hope that I get proved Wrong !
