Undivided South Canara district is the cradle of quality education: ASER

Bengaluru: The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2016 has again confirmed that compared to the students from rest of the districts, their contemporaries from two coastal districts of the state i.e., South Canara and Udupi have recorded the best learning levels. As per the report, South Canara and Udupi have shared no 1 and no 2 rankings in all the parameters of learning. This report again proved the fact that undivided South Canara district is the cradle of quality education.


According to the report, compared to both state and national average, students from both these coastal districts have recorded higher learning levels both in languages and mathematical skills making the educational institutions of these districts the preferred choice of parents.

According to the report, 33.7 percent of students in the age group of 6 years and 14 years of the South Canara district are studying in privateschools of which Udupi district has 55 percent share. According to the report, 0.1percent of the girls among the children of South Canara district in the age group of 6-14 years are out of school, to which Udupi district contributes 0.2 percent.

Learning level:

According to the report, among the students studying between Std III and V, 73.9 percent of children from South Canara district can read atleast Std I level text. And it is 73.8 percent in Udupi district alone.

Another interesting finding of the report is that 66.5 percent of children in these classes from South Canara district can do at least subtraction. And Udupi district’s contribution is 69.3 percent.

Learning level of senior class students:

According to the ASER report, 88.1percent of students from South Canara district who are studying between Std VI and VIII can read Std II level text. It is 80.8 percent in Udupi district. About 64.1 percent students from South Canara district studying between Std VI and Std VIII can do division. It is 51.9 percent in Udupi district.

According to the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) officials, this data has again proved that coastal district has best educational institutes of the state. “In SSLC as well as II PUC final examinations also, these two districts generally share first and second places”, said a senior officer.
