Ujire’s development has no place for this poor family of three

Belthangady: Ujire has developed by leaps and bounds in every possible way. Just a few kms way stands tall one of the most popular pilgrim centres of the state-Sri Kshethra Manjunatha Temple and what more, the Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project too has brought about a qualitative living in lives of people through its various micro financing schemes. But, what strikes as an anomaly is the existence of a family in Ujire, completely untouched by these positive changes. A dilapidated house waiting to collapse any moment, a stinky open drainage passing by, a heap of waste dumped right near the house and some faces lurking blankly from the house.

Welcome to the house of Prema. Over the last thirty years nothing much has changed for the family of Prema, who now makes her both ends meet by working as a coolie. Her husband Koosappa Achari had died several years ago following which she came to Ujire to live with her older brother Raghava. But tragedy struck Prema again when Raghava died. While Raghava’s wife left the house along with one daughter, the responsibility of two of Raghava’s kids-Santhosh and Veena fell on Prema. All of Prema’s efforts to trace the whereabouts of Raghava’s wife and one daughter only met failure and soon Prema accepted the responsibility she did not expect would fall on her.

Till date, Prema has been toiling very hard to bring up her nephew and niece who are studying in class VIII and VII respectively. Thanks to Ujire GP, life had become a hell for this family of three. On one side an open drains laid by the GP runs hijacking the family from its right to fresh, clean air. On the other hand a part of their land has been conveniently converted by some locals into a dumpyard, which too is posing inconvenience to the family.

????? ???? ????? ?????? ????????? ???????????? ????? ??????!They say that the land on which Prema lives is worth crores of rupees because of its ideal location. But, Prema and her young dependents live a life which can only be called depressing. Without proper toilet facilities, Prema and two teenagers depend on a shed which has been covered with Prema’s old nylon sarees.

While Prema says she is courageous enough to bring up her two children, she is often bogged down by the efforts of some of her community members who have been trying to evict her from her own land. She feels that she is being victimised all sides only because some unseen hands want to shun them out of their valuable land.

????? ???? ????? ?????? ????????? ???????????? ????? ??????!Seeing Prema’s plight Karnataka Karmika Hitharakshana Vedike President Lakshman Gowda had built a compound wall spending Rs 20,000 and also intimated the local GP about the plight of the family. But nothing has worked out for the family so far.

It is rather ironical that social work organisations and voluntary service bodies that are extremely active in Ujire area have failed to notice this family.

As of now, the family has only been hoping that the government opens its eyes towards their problems and helps them out.
