Dharwad: A special initiative of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) Dharwad, to empower ex-Servicemen in agriculture and related activities, under “Jai Jawan Jai Kissan” programme has been received well.

It was begun as the first of its kind programme among other agricultural universities of the country, which aimed at supporting ex-servicemen to start their second innings as agriculturists and join hands in nation building.

This unique programme “Jai Jawan Jai Kissan” was the brainchild of UAS Vice Chancellor Dr. D P Biradar who enthused ex-jawans keeping in mind their adherence to complete their works/tasks in all respects.

As part of the scheme, a four-day training programme was conducted recently at UAS campus for the ex-jawans in various disciplines of agriculture. Around 37 ex-jawans from seven districts under UAS purview actively took part in the basic training programme wherein they were taught to manage soil, water and climate, horticulture plantation, judicious use of fertilisers, agri marketing, mechanisation, dairy, sericulture among other things.

Dr. D P Biradar advised ex-jawans to primarily involve themselves in seed production, the flagship programme of the University and play the role of varsity’s ambassadors.

Commanding Officer Colonel Sanjeevkumar Chauhan of 24 Karnataka NCC Batallion, Dharwad asked them to focus on the proper use of agriculture technology to improve productivity.

Retd Colonel Bheemashankar Hipparagi, Subedar Chandrashekhar Shisanalli expressed their opinions on the occasion.

While speaking to Newskarnataka.com Major (Retd) Ramappa Sakroji urged the varsity authorities to arrange for soil testing facilities at each Hobli and popularise “Krishi Honda” programme. Others demanded some free services for ex-jawans.

Organisers said the varsity aimed to popularise the programme among more ex-jawans in seven districts, the number of such enthusiasts already nearing 100.
