Sullia: Every Saturday 13 member team comes together to fulfill the vision of man who changed the face of the nation. Irrespective of the weather conditions, the members assemble promptly every morning at 7 am to carry forward their mission. They dedicate the next 90 minutes towards cleaning areas which need attention on priority basis. The team members include few youth and others in their 50s.

The team’s service revolves around clearing the weeds on the roadside, cleaning blocked drains, filling potholes and keeping all areas clean where public frequent including schools, hospitals and bus stand.

When Swatch Bharath Abhiyan (SBA) kick started in October 2014, seven men came together to contribute their might towards the success of the campaign in their village limits. Gradually the strength increased to 13 with no lack of enthusiasm among them. Normally such initiatives die down soon after they begin but the Madappady Mahatma Gandhi Shram Dhan service team is an exception. It has crossed many hurdles and has touched the crucial 100 week mark since their mission began. When public were skeptical on the team’s movement, the drive and enthusiasm among the team members not only helped in sustaining their mission but also helped to take it to a different level. The members took an oath to ensure the success of their mission and have accordingly contributed in individual capacity. Shashidhar with 100% attendance has led from the front by committing himself to the team’s cause. The attendance records of Six members is 90% and above followed by four with 80% and above and only two members recorded above 70%, which is a distinction by itself. They have reordered their weekly efforts in log books and have not received any contribution from the public towards their services they offer voluntarily. The implements and equipment are arranged by team members on their own and their weekly assignment is delegated in advance by the convener of the group Vijay Kumar who keeps team members informed on SMS.

Each of the team members has his own personal, family and professional commitments but still they find time to engage with team to offer selfless service. The team members adhere to discipline and sweat for 90 minutes without compromise.

Recalling the initial days, convener Vijay Kumar says “when idea was mooted by him in the beginning every team member came forward. Former Taluk Panchayath Vice president and present Co-operative union president P C Jayaram, Directors Somashekhar Kevala, Rajkumar Poombady, CEO Prashanth Poombady, employee Sunil Madappady, former CEO Gangaiah Poombady and Agriculturists Vishwanth Golyady, Chandrashekhar Gundigadde, Shashidahar Kevala, Shivappa Poombady and Chandrashekar Guddemane are the esteemed members of this union. Puneet Paremajalu has filled the void by taking his father Lavappa Paremajalu’s position after he fell ill.

On the annual Swatchatha Diwas, this group received taluk level award. On October 22 a special program was organized to commemorate their 100 weeks of relentless service. Dr. Nandakumar from Guthigaru primary health centre who was part of the celebrations commended team’s efforts. Prompt member Shashidhar Kevala was felicitated on the occasion for 100% attendance.

The initial few weeks of team’s efforts failed to draw any public and media attention. Local Kannada daily carried a report on the team’s efforts in its April 2015 issue because of which the team shot into the limelight.

Selfless attitude of team members has helped the team’s progress and the 13 member team has become a model for Swatch Bharath Abhiyan launched by the government at rural level. Village Madappady stands out among the rest in the state in driving the message of Cleanliness among its residents. The contribution from the team titled ‘Madappady Mahatma Gandhi Shramdhan Service team’ has touched newer heights to keep the Father of the nation’s vision ‘Gram Rajya is Ram Rajya’ alive.
