Dharwad: While majority of the farmers of North Karnataka are looking forward with hopes towards implementation of Mahadayi, Kalasa-Banduri Nala projects, which is expected to cater to four districts, here is a good news atleast for the farmers of Dharwad district.
The State Cabinet has okayed the much awaited proposal for tapping the running water of Tupparihalla and storing it for filling major tanks in the district.
Tapping and storing the Tupparihalla water before flowing it to other local tanks, was the major demand of the people of the region. After Vinay Kulkarni took over as the district in-charge minister, he got the project cleared by the government. Accordingly, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah allocated the budget and the State Cabinet has okayed the project now.
Informing this, Vinay Kulkarni said Tupparihalla is a sub-stream of Bennihalla and during monsoon and a large quantum of water from here is being wasted. “Now with the government giving green signal for the project we can fill up nine important tanks with Tupparihalla water”, he added.
A project worth Rs. 22.50 Crore has been prepared based on the suggestions of water experts to tap the Tupparihalla water, store it in a large tank and then release it to other smaller tanks.
Now, the project to fill up one tank each at Tadkod, Neeralkatti and Bokyapur and two tanks at Tegur, Bogur and Garag village would be taken up.
As the tanks in Tadkod, Bokyapur, Garag, Bogur, Neeralkatti and Haletegur have less command area and could not fill even during monsoon, now the Tupparihalla water would be flowed to Bogur and Haletegur and through the barrage it would be lifted from here and later supplied to other tanks through lift irrigation, minister added.
After desilting of all the tanks, water lifting process will commence once the monsoon commences in the district, he hoped.
Farmer leader Prakash Angadi of Navalgund has expressed joy over fulfillment of the long cherished demand of farmers.
