Mangaluru: Believe it or not, it is an initiative taken by a 9-year-old-girl to tackle increasing global warming! She has been planting saplings during her school vacations by spending her pocket money.
Honey H R, daughter of Rathan Kumar and Pavitra, from Jeppinamogaru is pursuing her fifth standard in St. Agnes School in the city. Her awareness about the increasing heat in the environment due to global warming led her to decide on planting saplings in the vicinity of Jeppinamogaru along with her team “Green Warriors.” The team also has distributed the plants to many houses.
Initially, she was alone while she took this drive and spent her pocket money to purchase plant saplings. Her move to tackle the global warming also influenced neighboring children. Later a five children from the neighborhood joined Honey, to work for social cause and named the team as ‘Green Warriors’.
Speaking to newskarnataka.com, her mother Pavitra Rathan said that when Honey told her parents about taking up this task to tackle global warming they did not want to discourage her by saying that she was too young for that. “Instead we supported her. Initially, she started planting saplings by spending from her pockets. Later, many children supported her and also helped her in purchasing the saplings. When children come to us with their thought they should be supported. We should not discourage them”, she added.
Now the team “Green Warriors” has 14 members. The team which has started executing their environmental concern by planting saplings in the vicinity of Jeppinamogaru,is planning to take up cleanliness drive during their next vacations.
Corporator Surendra said, “We, the grown up people should know about the global warming but unfortunately it is not so. And children who are too young have taken up this cause. This is really an inspiration to the society.”
He also assured of full support to the team “Green Warriors” in its upcoming drives.
