On Shivabaugh-St Agnes College stretch there is one such sunken concrete lid. Many of the two-wheeler users have had run over this manhole and escaped a major accident only due to their presence of mind.

This is the stretch where many parents are seen taking their children on the two-wheelers. In case, the rider fails to take notice of the manhole, then God save him!

One of the bike riders who is thankful to god for saving him from this death trap, speaking to newskarnataka.com said that while it was God Almighty who saved him from a fatal accident as he was about to be run over by a bus when he almost toppled over the same manhole, he says that the incident left his tyre rim and shock absorber damaged. He says that two of his friends had damaged their collarbone by running over such manholes elsewhere in the city.

The problem has been worsened by the monsoons. While some of the manholes go inundated, literally becoming invisible to riders, at many more spots the riders often risk their life while applying brakes near the manhole as they are likely to skid on the road.

While the ones meeting accident land up in the hospital, the owners of the damaged vehicles fail to approach the insurance company  for claim of damages, where claim is reimbursed  by insurance only  partly, due to the innocence and ignorance of the vehicle owners. The balance amount for the estimate damaged will have to be silently borne by the vehicle owner or user. Many a vehicle owners in the past have failed to  get adequate compensation after approaching the courts. Vehicle owners are left to face all these problems after road tax is promptly fleeced from them.

While the Municipal Commissioner as usual did not respond to the phone calls, Mangalore City Corporation Mayor Harinath said, “Now that the issue has been brought to my notice, I will send officials concerned to inspect such precarious spots and set it right immediately.”

One may have to only wait and watch if the MCC will set right the manholes after a life is lost or it will act immediately.
