BJ Bharath, whose music for the 2013 hit movie ‘Simple Agi Ondh Love story’ has won multiple awards, is in the limelight. His latest, ‘Bahuparaak’ is running to packed houses and rave reviews. He is also currently working on a couple of new projects.
This simple huduga who made it big in the music world, talks about the simple joys of his life, in an exclusive interview with Preeti M, Newskarntaka’s Bangalore correspondent.
Was music always on your mind or did it just happen to you?
I use to sing as a kid and my parents were encouraging enough to train me further. I learnt Carnatic and classical music from Sarvamangala Shankar and Hindustan Parameshwar Hegde. After performing at concerts, I started composing songs of my own.
Where you a naughty boy as a kid?
I had a very good image in college, but was actually a very mischievous boy. I was not as innocent as I looked. I carried a good boy image as I was a good singer and most people thought I was very disciplined.
On a weekend what kind of cuisine do you like to have?
I am not a very fussy person when it comes to food. Though I hail from a vegetarian family, I eat non veg cuisine. I love Chinese food and sea food as well.
What’s the ring tone on your phone?
Music is always in my ears. So I prefer something simple and so have the conventional ‘tring tring tring’ (laughs)
Do you love pets?
I am dog lover since birth. I have a boxer as my pet. I got him from a friend. I have named him ‘Minchu’. He is both naughty and loving at the same time.
If I open your wardrobe which color would I find the most?
I’m not crazy about clothes, but love to go black and white most of the time.
What makes Bharath angry?
Actually I am a very chilled out person. My threshold is very high. But I can’t take people betraying me. And stupidity gets me really angry.
Are you a techno savvy?
Yeah I am. I can’t live without my Ipod and the internet. But I m not a brand fanatic.
Is Bharath a momma’s boy?
Nope, not at all. I m quite independent and believe in doing things on my own. I hardly trouble my mom. When she is out, I manage to make rice. If you call that cooking, then yes I can cook as well.
Do awards matter to you?
I am quite neutral when it comes to awards. When your work is appreciated and a token of appreciation is the award, and you win it, definitely it gives me a lot of happiness. But at the same time I am not sad if I don’t win one..
Will you try your hands at acting?
Not acting, but direction may be. I can never do a masala movie, but a decent commercial movie is on my mind. I somehow feel there are very few movies that are dedicated to music. I certainly would like to direct one of those. I am a very big fan of Poornachandra Tejaswi, and love most of his work.
Two or three years down the line, will we see Bharath making music for Bollywood?
I would definitely want to do that if given a chance. But my ultimate ambition is to make good music. I take my time. I would be happier doing fewer projects. Movies, that I create music for should be good. I always make sure I listen to the whole story and then give my bit.
