Mangaluru: More than 10 acres of agricultural land for research at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Agricultural Research Station, Kankanady, Mangaluru is lying idle from the past 8 years, as no research activity could be taken up, because of unchecked flow of sewage from Gorigudde and Sutturpet.

The Dakshina Kannada unit of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Agricultural Research Station, was established in 2004 and is one among the 634 kendras in the country.

“The agricultural land was used for research initially for two years, but due to the continuous flow of sewage, it became impossible for us to even think of going anywhere near the land to use it for research. The seepage is so heavy that if one gets into the land, you will sink up to belly and no agricultural equipment can be used,” said Prof and head of KVK, Dr Shivkumar Magada.

Dr Magada further said that all efforts have been made to bring the City Corpoation authorities to the site. He said, “They have taken note of the situation, but have turned a blind eye to all our letters written to them in this regard. Situation has worsened after the construction of the second railway line. The main sewage drain, that was crossing the railway line and reaching the sewage treatment plant, now stands cut off, leaving the sewage to inundate the entire agricultural field. The City Corporation should have ensured that the railway line was constructed, providing a drain for sewage. This has brought unhappiness among a group of farmers, who have made allegations that KVK at Mangaluru is not giving required service to farmers in Dakshina Kannada and are unable to carry out the desirable research”.

According to Dr Magade, Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Mangaluru, under the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar and is the only KVK under it and has been catering to animal husbandry beside agriculture and horticulture. There are a few acres of land available, where regular cultivation for research is done.

“If our efforts with the Mangaluru City Corporation officials yield results, this KVK would become a model in the coming years. The apathy shown by civic authorities have been a cause for concern. Those are very fertile land, which have been inundated by sewage. City Corporation has to compensate us for the land lying idle all these years. All efforts are being made in this regard,” Dr Magade added.
