Fr Francis D’Almeida invoked God’s blessings through a prayer at the beginning of the programme. President of Rachana, Gilbert D’Souza in his welcome address informed the importance of organ donation.
Dr Derek Lobo who spoke on the occasion said that there are thousands of patients awaiting donors for various organs. The dead are either buried or burnt. Their organs could be used to save numerous lives.
“Less than 500 people donate organs a year in India, whereas 6000 people do it in US. Around 1.5 lakh people are waiting for organs in which only 3,000 receive organs. 90 per cent of the patients die in the long wait,” he said.
Dr Lobo further explained about the organs and tissues that could be donated and also the various laws in place for the organ donation process.
“Organ other than the eye cannot be donated here in Mangaluru, due to lack of facilities. Even after the city being an educational hub, there are no proper organ donation facilities. We need to join together and set up a state-of-the-art organ transplant for kidney and other organs at Father Muller’s College Hospital.
Dr Norman Mendonca spoke about eye donation and explained the entire process from the removal till the transplant of the eye.
Dr Christopher Pais spoke on euthanasia and informed the gathering about different types of death in relation to the brain. He also spoke about passive euthanasia and the law passed by the Supreme Court in regards euthanasia.
A Q&A session followed with the doctors where they answered a few questions from the audience.
