Dharwad: The state government has decided to import sand from other countries following shortage of sand in the state, said Mines and Geology Minister Vinay Kulkarni.
Speaking to media persons in Dharwad, Kulkarni said meetings had been chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah regarding importing the sand from Malaysia.
The issue of rate of sand in some of the South Asian countries is being studied and the same would be imported from a country which could supply it at a cheap rate and yet give quality.
The shortage of sand has affected almost all districts including Dharwad, with the price being quoted for a ton at around Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000, which has affected common people who have ventured out to build houses, he said.
Besides this, the government has decided to open M-Sand manufacturing units and depots. The sand policy of Odisha and Maharashtra seems scientific, and the government is contemplating implementing the same policy in State too, he added.
