Dharwad: The poor and shelterless people under the banner “Rajya Niveshana Rahitara Horata Samiti” took out a silent protest march in Dharwad on October 16 demanding the district administration to hand over the available government land to Hubballi-Dharwad Urban Development Authority (HUDA), to distribute among the homeless.

More than 300 people took part in the silent protest rally condemning the lethargic attitude of the district authorities ignoring their demands since years.

Addressing the protesters, Samiti coordinator Nagaraj Gurikar alleged that though there was no legal barrier in handing over the select barren government lands including the ones at Rayanal village to HUDA to build housing complex for the poor, the authorities were keeping mum on this.

Some industries which took government lands on leases in 1940-50s around Dharwad have closed their operation years ago but the government has failed to take possession of those lands, he alleged.

Samiti advisor Ramanjanappa Aldalli said despite having identified some lands across the state for the purpose and CM having agreed in principle, the officials were not executing the work, while demanding shelter for each of the poor person.

Raju Hirewodeyar, Gangadhar Badiger, Kiransingh Rajapur among others led the protest march.
