Dharwad: Residents of Tapovana and surrounding areas in Dharwad on Friday morning woke up to a surprising news that a fish-laden lorry had turned turtle nearby, and majority of them rushed to the spot. Well! Not out of sheer curiosity or an intention to help! They were in a hurry to flick as many spilled fish for free. And they had gone prepared with bags and baskets!
To control the people eyeing for the “prize catch”, the police who rushed to the spot, resorted to mild caning to disperse the crowd.
Police said a fish trader Vakilkhan Jalilkhan of Mumbai was carrying cat fish stock in a lorry, to Bengaluru. The lorry turned turtle near Tapovana, and the boxes filled with fish were spread at the accident spot. To Khan’s unpleasant surprise none from Tapovana was a sadhu!
People young and old alike including women who rushed to the spot on hearing the news along with bags ignored the driver who sustained minor injuries in the accident and competed with each other to collect fish and took it away.
On getting the information of increasing mob beside by-pass road the police rushed to the spot, and resorted to lathi charge.
Later, the lorry was lifted using a crane. A case has been registered with the Traffic Police Station.
