Navalgund (Dharwad): A group of people sacrificed a large buffalo on the eve of Mahalaya Amavasya in order to fulfil their vows through occult practices.
The incident took place on the night of the Mahalaya Amavasya (new moon day) in the village of Belawatti, where they killed it by slitting its tongue and tearing open its belly.
The carcass of the huge buffalo that belonged to Sharanappa Annigeri was found in the backyard of his residence this morning.
Owner Sharanappa purchased the same by paying Rs 35000 two months ago, during animal fair at Navalgund market, it is gathered.
Owner Sharanappa’s family is involved in breeding of livestock including buffalos.
Veterinary Medical Officer K H Kyadada accompanied by police visited Sharnappa’s residence to gather more details of the incident.
Villagers suspect occult practices may have led to the killing of the animal.
The Supreme Court last month had stayed the clause of prohibiting sacrifice of cattle for religious purposes under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation of Livestock Markets) Rules, 2017.
However, cattle does not include ‘cow’ as its slaughter is illegal in most states.
