Kargil Vijay Divas: Homage paid to martyrs

Dharwad: District-level officials, NCC, Scouts and Guides, police officials, school children, retired army officials and the general public paid homage to martyrs of the Kargil war on the occasion of the “Kargil Vijay Divas” celebrated in Dharwad.

The district administration and the North Karnataka Soldiers Welfare Association organised the programme at the Kargil Obelisk near the Deputy Commissioner’s office. A two-minute silence was observed in honour of Indian soldiers.

Deputy Commissioner S B Bommanahalli, Police Commissioner Panduranga Rane, HDMC Commissioner Siddalingayya Hiremath, Brig (Retd) S G Bhagwath and several other dignitaries paid homage on the occasion.

Association Secretary Krishna Joshi said that the Indian soldiers had fought bravely with Pakistani soldiers who had entered Indian territory during Kargil war. As many as 533 Indian soldiers died of whom 13 were from the State, he added.

Bommanahalli assured that henceforth on August 15, the district administration would lay down a new tradition of honouring war veterans and the kin of their family killed in the Kargil war. The state government would be urged to celebrate Kargil Divas as a public programme, he added.

The mothers and widows of the soldiers who were killed in the Kargil war were honoured. Association President Chandrashekar Amingad, ex-serviceman Vasanth Lad and others were present.
