Dharwad: Members of the farmers’ wing of the Janata Dal (Secular) held a overnight protest demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on August 11 demanding the government to sort out the complex problems plaguing the farming community.
Issues pertaining to crop insurance scheme, complete waiver of farm loans and early resolution to the Mahadayi dispute among others topped their list of demands. Addressing the gathering, Navalgund MLA N H Konaraddi said both the state and union governments had failed to help the farmers who are suffering due to scanty rainfall and crop loss for the past five years.
He demanded that the Centre must withdraw the affidavit filed before the Supreme Court stating that it was not possible to ensure 50 percent profit to the farmers as recommended by the Dr. M S Swaminathan Committee and implement the recommendations of the committee’s report.
He was of the opinion that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah should take one more delegation to New Delhi to urge Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene in the Mahadayi dispute.
Local JDS leaders Guru Hunasimarad, Vikas Soppin, B B Gangadharmath, Mohan Arkasali and others took part.
