Dharwad: The heavy rains that lashed parts of Dharwad, Navalgund and Savadatti taluks on Tuesday late night, has literally created havoc for the border area villages.

The Kallahalla which flows between Inamhongal and Shirur village is in spate and has caused severe destruction.

The rains which started to lash on Tuesday evening, picked up pace in the late night and the water level at the Kallahalla increased drastically. The fields located adjacent to the Kallahalla upto 500 meters were completely submerged. The bunds constructed in the fields at Karikatti, Chikulligeri, Hireulligeri, and Doddwad have breached, and rain water has gushed into the fields damaging the crops.

Two tom-toms (goods carrier) too were submerged in the Kallahalla and the villagers had a tough time to lift the vehicles which were struck in the silt. Four persons who were travelling in these goods carrier had a narrow escape.

The villagers who saw them getting washed away in flash floods, saved them with the help of a rope and pulled them out of the waters.

Shirur

The villagers in Shirur said this was for the first time in last 16 years that Doddhalla was in spate.
Rainwater has entered into the fields located on the right side of the stream damaging crops.

Villagers told that they had been asking the district administration to construct a protective wall for Kallahalla and to clear the encroachment. Unfortunately, no such steps were taken which resulted in floods-like situation, they said.
