Gouli community takes out rally to press for their demands

Dharwad: The Dhangar Gouli community members who held protest infront of Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Monday demanded the government to include them in OBC category-1.

gouli1The protesters including representatives from Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, Haveri, Shivamogga, Chikmagalur and Davangere districts gathered under the banner Karnataka State Dhangar Gouli Youth Federation at Kadapa Maidhan and passed through important streets before reaching DC office where they held protest.

Dressed in their traditional way, the protesters even jived to their folk songs and attracted the people passing through DC office.

The community leaders who addressed the gathering said the Gouli community was spread in Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Dharwad, Haveri, Shivamogga, Chikmagalur and Davangere districts, and had a population of over three lakhs. These people belong to the lower strata of the society and are not educationally and financially empowered.

They demanded the government to empower them socially and help them to come to the mainstream of the society.

Their other demands include issuing caste certificate in the name of Gouli community, including them under the nomadics and semi-nomadics category and releasing a special package to the community in the upcoming State Budget.

A memorandum was submitted to the district administration on the occasion.
