Four-day Krishi Mela at UAS from Sept 22

Dharwad: The University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad will hold “Krishi Mela-2017” from September 22 to 25, on the theme “Water for Development of Agriculture.”

Addressing the media, UAS Vice Chancellor D P Biradar said the Krishi Mela would be focusing on harvesting rainwater, improved irrigation methods, reclaiming the alkaline soil, protection and improvement of soil, use of improved farm equipment, farmers’ innovations, agro-forestry and much more.

The Krishi Mela would be holding special seminar and demonstration on ornamental aquaculture, aquaponics, fin fish and shell fish farming.

Seed Mela
Dr. Biradar said the Krishi Mela would begin with the inauguration of “Seed Mela” on September 22 by MP Prahlad Joshi.

He said for the first time, the UAS will be distributing free seedlings along with the purchase of seeds by the farmers to promote agro-forestry. The UAS has tied up with the Forest Department which would be supplying teak wood, neem and other varieties of saplings to the farmers, free of cost.
He said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah would inaugurate the Krishi Mela on September 23 at 11:30 AM, while Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda would be releasing souvenirs.

On the third day “Shresta Krishika” and “Shresta Krishi Mahile” felicitation programme would be held. “Matsya Mela”, fruits and flower show, dog and cattle shows are the other programmes organised at the mela.

Interaction of farmers, a special talk on doubling the income of farmers will be held on the last day, he said.
