Dharwad: “The mechanical lifestyle and greed has not spared farming community too. Farmers neglecting millets and going for commercial crops has impacted their lives too. Farmers should organically grow food grains and vegetables,” advised District In-charge Minister Vinay Kulkarni.
Speaking after inaugurating the Organic & Millet Mela and taluk-level comprehensive agriculture campaign at the District Agriculture Centre in Dharwad, he stated that farmers should lead a simple lifestyle and should not commit suicide due to the loan burden.
Even in drought situation, agriculture can be profitable, but only if farmers grow millets in an organic method, he said adding that farmers better stress on drip irrigation for which 90 percent government subsidy is available.
Nowadays the junk food has replaced organic food and hence the concept of organic food should be made popular among children too, he added.
“Farmers can lead a self-reliant life by growing food grains, vegetables besides the fodder they require for their cattle. Millets are in good demand due to increasing health consciousness and they can be grown even with scanty rainfall. Dairy farming and poultry farming would also bring additional revenue,” he said.
Organic farmers from different places displayed and sold millets and vegetables in over 20 stalls.
