Navalgund: The farmers of Navalgund resorted to an instant protest and blocked the National Highway 218 for nearly three hours, for having been denied the permission to have an audience with the BJP National President Amit Shah.

A large number of farmers staged the protest on the national highway and also burnt tyres to create a blockade on the road. Later, at around 4.30 pm, the farmers withdrew the protest following a request by the local police.

Farmer leader Lokanath Hebsur told media persons that Navalgund farmers had submitted a memorandum to the Police and Revenue departments seeking permission to meet Shah during his scheduled visit to Adichunchanagiri Matt in Mandya district on August 14.

“Initially, the district police in consultation with the Mandya police had agreed to our request but later we were denied permission for reasons unknown. The organisers of the programme and the Central forces have decided against permitting us to meet Mr. Shah,” he said.

Hebsur said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah should fix a date for an all-party meeting to discuss the Mahadayi issue in Belagavi, failing which farmers will launch a hunger strike on August 15.
