Dharwad: The Dharwad Zilla Panchayat has set a target of building 43,368 toilets in different villages before October 2, said Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Snehal Rayamane.
Speaking after inaugurating a workshop on "Total Sanitation Campaign", Snehal said, "We wish the district records the maximum achievements in this direction. People too have to coordinate with the officials.
To celebrate Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 in a meaningful way, the government had decided to identify villages which have done away with the practice of open defecation and declare them open defecation-free villages. The officials have to work in such a way as to get this tag for the maximum number of villages in the district.
Development in real sense means eradicating the system of open defecation in all the villages and towns. The government is providing financial assistance of Rs 15,000 to Dalit families and Rs 12,000 to the above poverty line card holders to get toilets constructed. Besides, Rs 150 is being paid as motivation amount to families to help them opt for building and using toilets," she said.
She asked nodal officers of the campaign to camp in villages, educate people on the need for constructing toilets besides informing them about financial assistance being provided by the government.
