Hubballi: After four cases of Dengue were recorded in the Dharwad District, the health department has initiated a larvae study to identify mosquito-breeding places in Dharwad district. The authorities have also planned awareness campaign which will educate people on the measures to be taken to fight dengue.

Usually, larvae are found inside houses, in unused freshwater, air coolers and unused tyres. Dengue and malaria are mosquito-borne diseases and experts say that clean surroundings helps in curbing the menace. Citizens have been informed to alert the HDMC zonal office in case their area is afflicted with the mosquito menace. The HDMC carries out fogging in such areas. Dengue spreads from aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Destroying the larvae of the mosquitoes will significantly help combating the disease. However, larvae detection is the biggest challenge before the district administration.
In combat mode, the district health authorities have directed their health inspectors to visit all taluks for the survey to detect such locations.

Dr N M Angadi, district health officer, told a local daily that precautionary measures have helped in curbing dengue this year. “The PHCs were asked to conduct larvae test at every house. Asha workers are also being used for taking the precautionary measures,” said Angadi. “A five-bed special ward has been exclusively created for dengue cases at KIMS, Dharwad District Hospital and SDM Hospital,” he added.

People should also follow the instructions given by district health departments and HDMC to prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases. “We have initiated several programmes in Hubballi-Dharwad and also in the district. We are also conducting programmes such as larvae survey, spraying, fogging, and information, education and communication (IEC) activities,” he added.
