Dharwad: Responding to the objection filed by land owners with regard to the land acquisition for Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) project, the High Court, Dharwad Bench has questioned why the compound walls and trees were cleared before the land price negotiation meeting could come to a consensus.

As many as 35 land owners who own lands between Gandhi Nagar and Alur Venkatrao Circle in Dharwad, had filed an objection in the High Court against the decision of the BRTS project to acquire the land.

The court had asked the deputy commissioner to call for a meeting and negotiate the price for the land to be acquired for the BRTS project.

The divisional bench headed by Justice Raghvendra Chauhan and Justice Srinivas Harishkumar on Friday, directed the deputy commissioner to appear before the court in person and give his statement.

Contempt of court petition

The land owners had filed a contempt of court petition in the High Court claiming that before the price of the land was settled, the compound walls and trees along the Hubballi-Dharwad road in Dharwad City were removed for BRTS project.

Admitting this, the High Court had asked the deputy commissioner to hold a meeting and fix the price of the land by negotiating with the land owners. Following the court direction, though the deputy commissioner had held four meetings consensus was not achieved.
