Dharwad: Members of the district unit of Karnataka Dalita Sangharsh Samiti (Ambedkar Vada) held a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Saturday demanding a high level enquiry into the attack on a Dalit agri labourer and the alleged negligence of police personnel in giving him the medical aid on time.

The members who raised slogans against Garag police personnel alleged that an agri labourer Shivanand R Kamati belonging to Honnapur village in Dharwad taluk was returning home on Friday morning on his bike after attending an ailing relative in Belagavi.

On the way, his bike skidded and overturned on the roadside. The bike also hit a passerby woman on the road and the scared lady raised an alarm. Hearing this, some people from the nearby Madikoppa village gathered and beat him black and blue assuming that he misbehaved with the woman. Later, a relative of Shivanand was summoned to the spot and they hit him too.

On receiving the information, the Garag police who came to the spot took the duo to the police station and made them to sit for more than two hours without giving any medical aid, the protesters alleged.

Police later arranged for medical aid and Shivanand was shifted to KIMS Hubballi for higher treatment.

The protesters who condemned the behavior of police with the injured persons also questioned whether saving the life of a person was not important than following police procedures.

A memorandum was sent to the home minister in this regard through the district administration demanding a high-level enquiry into the incident and action against those people who attacked the duo.

DSS State Convener Lakshman B Doddamani and other members were present.
