Dharwad: Conservation of forest and ecology has become an ardent need to check natural vagaries like scanty rains, global warming and other climatic ill-effects, said Conservator of Forest, Dharwad Circle, K D Udapudi.
Speaking after inaugurating the International Day of Forest here at Karnataka Science College in Dharwad, Udapudi said every year, more than 130 lakh hectares of forest land was being destroyed across the world for various reasons, which is proving hazardous on the ecology including varieties of flora and fauna.
Adding more woes to it, culprits are looting the forest wealth and mercilessly chopping valuable trees but the forest department is working round the clock to check such acts and protect the natural wealth, he added.
He said afforestation must become a mass movement. Though few organisations are working towards environmental protection, to get success people’s support is needed, he said.
Environmentalist Shankar Kumbi asked the students to complain to the Forest Department or at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, if they found anyone chopping trees.
Karnataka Science College Vice Principal B S Giriyappanavar presided over.
RFO Vijaykumar, college staff and others were present.
